Andrew Jackson: Back Country Boy, Born & Bred
Presented by: Laura Gayle Ledford, Interpretive Ranger Andrew Jackson State Park
The 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson may have walked on your property when he was a lad. What drew the Jackson family to this area? He was just an average boy from the Carolina back country who rose to the highest office in the land. How did the experiences of his childhood and adolescence help to toughen him into "Old Hickory." How did fighting for independence during the American Revolution influence his future foreign and domestic policies? How did walking these red clay hills prepare him for the White House? Take a look at the community that shaped his views and nurtured him to become the Hero of New Orleans and the champion of the common man.
Laura lives on the same acreage that Andrew Jackson roamed as a child. As a member of the New Acquisition Militia and as a Friend of the Cussewago Rifles, she enjoys portraying the role of a camp follower during the American Revolution. She is active in the Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and an associate member of the Van Wyck Woman's Club. She greatly enjoys working with the Children of the American Revolution as the South Carolina Society Senior Organizing Secretary and the Senior President of our local Martha Bratton Chapter.
