Lancaster Rocks: The Contributions of Lancaster, SC to American Popular Music
Presented by Dr. Stephen Criswell, director of the Native American Center at USC-LFor such a small place, Lancaster, SC, has produced a surprising number of musicians and producers, not only artists who have gained fame, but ones who shaped and continue to influence American popular culture. This program will introduce you to Lancaster County legends behind the music of such famous bands as R.E.M and the Zodiacs and associated with such classic R&B songs as "Stay."
Learn about Maurice Williams, Don Dixon and Freakshow host Todd Ray as well as up and coming artists who have local and national appeal such as rapper Gifted Soul, Bluegrass band the Hinson Girls, emo rockers heckdang and Modern Moxie, and roots rockers Sol Driven Train. All trace their roots to the Lancaster area.
About our presenterDr. Stephen Criswell is the Director of Native American at USC Lancaster, where is he also a professor of English and Anthropology. Dr. Criswell is a folklorist whose research interests include foodways, Southeastern Native American traditions, traditional music, and popular culture. He is a native of Gaston County, NC and is a graduate of Belmont Abbey College, UNC Charlotte, and the University of Louisiana. He is the 2018 recipient of the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Advocacy Award, given each year by the SC Legislature.
