********CRITICAL APPEAL FOR YOUR SUPPORT********

PLEASE READ TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE CURRENT SITUATION

WE NEED TO PROVE TO OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS THAT ENOUGH OF OUR RESIDENTS WANT A PROPER SHUFFLEBOARD AMENITY. WE HAVE IT ON GOOD AUTHORITY THAT THE BOARD WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PERMIT THE TOPIC OF SHUFFLEBOARD TO BE ADDED TO ANY OF THEIR BOARD MEETING AGENDAS UNTIL THE RESIDENTS, ONCE AGAIN, PROVE THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE TO OUR RESIDENTS!!!!!

The only way to do this is to make an overwhelming showing before the Board at the Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 1:00PM, in the Lodge. EVEN IF YOU HAVE NEVER ATTENDED A BOARD MEETING, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO REARRANGE YOUR SCHEDULE, THIS IS THE TIME TO MAKE A SHOWING. THERE ARE NO WORDS TO ADEQUATELY STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR SUPPORT. WE BELIEVE THAT THE FATE OF SHUFFLEBOARD AS A FULLY VIABLE AMENITY WILL BE SEALED, INDEFINITELY, IF THERE IS NOT A CONVINCING SHOWING. PLEASE MAKE THE EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO ATTEND. Consider placing a copy of this flyer into all the mail tubes in your POD. This has already been done in at least one POD.

PLEASE DON'T JUST ASSUME THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE THERE BECAUSE ENOUGH OTHER RESIDENTS WILL ATTEND. WE NEED TO TURN OUT IN FORCE!!!

While not all residents are interested in this amenity, we all spend a lot of our annual HOA dues to run and maintain other amenities that we, ourselves don't utilize. Even if it is not your own personal preference, be there to support the wishes of your neighbors that do support this amenity, especially those with walkers, canes and even wheelchairs that cannot engage in other more demanding activities. You can expect that there will be two or three additional club emails making this appeal. We apologize for filling up your email inbox, if you have already seen these appeals, however, this matter is just too important and it would be regrettable if we cannot generate a major show of support at the Town Hall Meeting.

WHY SHOULD EVERY RESIDENT CARE ABOUT SHUFFLEBOARD?

1. Sun City has an aging population. Unfortunately, as we get older, we are faced with increasing physical limitations causing us start to forgo some of the more demanding activities such as softball, tennis and pickleball. Almost anyone can play and enjoy Shuffleboard, even most residents with physical handicaps. While many residents can engage in more rigorous activities now, no one knows when they might experience physical limitations in the future. 

2. Our Shuffleboard Club is committed to accommodating the needs of our residents with Disabilities. Shuffleboard would become the only amenity at SCCL could be easily engaged in by our residents with Disabilities. We would like to offer regularly scheduled events for our residents with Disabilities, but due to the current disadvantageous logistics, it is not feasible to do so. The only way we would be able to make such accommodations, would be to obtain the support of our Board to overcome these logistical problems.

3. Shuffleboard is a very common amenity at active adult communities throughout the country. This is an amenity that will make Sun City more attractive to prospective home buyers. We were approached by Treetops last year and they were already exploring how to introduce Shuffleboard to their community.

4. While we have three courts available, two of them are installed on steeply pitched concrete, making it impossible to aim directly at the intended target and they are separated into two locations. This renders it unfeasible to conduct competitive play and league play.

5. A fourth Shuffleboard court is still in its original packaging, sitting in storage on a pallet since we paid for it from our Capital Improvement Fund in October, 2023. THIS IS JUST EXASPERATING!!!

Signs will be provided to all that attend the Town Hall Meeting to make your presence known and to demonstrate the extent of the support from our residents.

Open Play events are routinely scheduled for every Monday morning starting at 10:00am and every Friday afternoon starting at 1:30pm. In this way, members can plan their shuffleboard play on an ongoing, routine basis so they will know when the open play days and times are every week without having to check the calendar. We will monitor this approach and prepared to make any adjustments, if deemed appropriate. We encourage you all to participate, have lots of fun and make new friends.

***** Important Major Announcements for 2025 *******

• The Shuffleboard Club Leadership has unanimously decided that until we a have a permanent Shuffleboard Complex that can accommodate both scheduled tournament play and league play, membership fees will be waived.  It continues to be a disappointment that the logistics of the current shuffleboard court locations put our club at a disadvantage relative to other Sun City active sports clubs.
• There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding by a number of residents that requires clarification. As most of you already know, the Board has approved a capital expenditure project to construct a permanent Shuffleboard Complex. Club leadership intends to work closely with the Board to reduce the estimated cost, to the extent possible, while ensuring that the standards of quality and safety expected at Sun City are achieved. The cost estimate included in the capital expenditures budget was developed independently by the Facilities Committee without participation in the bidding process by the Shuffleboard Club. Furthermore, an important distinction must be made to ensure that all residents are properly informed about any such expenditures. Any funds expended for this purpose are NEVER taken from the HOA dues that you pay monthly. Therefore, approval of this project for 2025 was not in any way a factor in why the 2025 HOA dues increased. ALL SUCH CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS ARE FUNDED FROM THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS FUND, A SEPARATE FUND. This separate fund never receives any monies from the HOA dues. All sources of money are received only from the sales of homes in Sun City. Every time a home is sold, 1/3 of one percent of the sales price is deposited with the Capital Improvement Fund.

INTRODUCTION

The Shuffleboard Courts are open for play by all residents. Please familiarize yourself with all the rules posted on the wall and on the storage cabinets. There are two storage cabinets, one which will be kept locked for Active club member use only. The other storage cabinet has playing equipment for non-members and will remain unlocked. In order to maximize the useful life of this new amenity, please handle the equipment and the courts respectfully.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO JOIN

While every SCCL resident is welcome to play shuffleboard, specific times will be reserved for club member regular play, club member tournament play, club member social events, physically challenged residents and their caregivers and our grandkids. All SCCL residents are encouraged to join and become active in our club.

We are proud to report that our club has reached a new milestone with 405 members, making the Shuffleboard Club one of the largest clubs at SCCL.
